Unique file name

I know full well about metadata and teach my customers how to leverage it properly in every implementation. It does not make sense to me to have the same document with different metadata. That sounds like a mess of confusion. Yes, it doesn't just prevent overwriting - it prevents making any edits to any documents, which is what it sounds like you're asking. This includes metadata, because to SharePoint, it is all one record in the database.

The document and metadata are together as one, so if you can't edit the doc, you can't edit the metadata either. You can use the Document ID feature. If you use InfoPath, then you can generate unique filenames and disallow overwriting existing filenames, but uploading regular documents doesn't generate filenames - it asks you to specify a filename. Also, in some others DMS we can also have several files with the same filename different metatadata Yes Serge! Right to the point.

The last years I came across several situations with SharePoint that requires that every uploaded document is a new one. Say for example contracts or CV. Users make contracts, put this in a contract library all with different meta data.

But often with the same name like "Contract. Now I have to ask them again like in the "old days" when using folders on some network resource to make up a unique name before they upload! They ask me in return: why do I need to make up a name and how do I know the name is not already in use and why is the program not doing this for me?

And they are right. I know there are tricks to get what I want but this is something that I was hoping for to be possible OOB in ! Even in the Foundation. It's not that difficult to develop in a default library I think. Clayton: the document id feature does not prevent from overwriting. The only way is using the Document Centre template with rules etc. This is adding random characters to the filename if a filename already exists. But I'm looking for the simple solution, just turning it on or off at library level.

The file name is only there because some storage technic. And we all know: do not bother users with technical stuff ;-. Years and years ago we had to explain the file name, extension and directory structure to users.

Show Hint 2. If the name is not present in the map, you can use it without adding any suffixes. Show Hint 3. If the name is present in the map, append the smallest proper suffix, and add the new name to the map. Sign in to view your submissions. Regardless of the user's device or operating system, the file input provides a button that opens up a file picker dialog that allows the user to choose a file. Including the multiple attribute, as shown above, specifies that multiple files can be chosen at once.

The user can choose multiple files from the file picker in any way that their chosen platform allows e. The FileList behaves like an array, so you can check its length property to get the number of selected files.

A number specifying the date and time at which the file was last modified, in milliseconds since the UNIX epoch January 1, at midnight. A Date object representing the date and time at which the file was last modified. This is deprecated and should not be used. Use lastModified instead. A string specifying the file's path relative to the base directory selected in a directory picker that is, a file picker in which the webkitdirectory attribute is set. This is non-standard and should be used with caution.

Often you won't want the user to be able to pick any arbitrary type of file; instead, you often want them to select files of a specific type or types. For example, if your file input lets users upload a profile picture, you probably want them to select web-compatible image formats, such as JPEG or PNG. Acceptable file types can be specified with the accept attribute, which takes a comma-separated list of allowed file extensions or MIME types.
